When we think about exercise for the body, our pictures are pretty clear.  Images of running, swimming, bicycling, jumping jacks, treadmills, and classes full of sweating bodies come into view.  However, when we think about exercise for the mind, what do we see?  How do we do it?  Who actually does it?  Well . . . Students do it.  People who have challenging jobs and interesting professions do it.  Mental workouts can be a part of our work, our school work, even our house work.  Raising our children can exercise our brains (as well as our bodies!) However, to truly strengthen the brain, boost the brain cells, and build the muscles of the mind, it is important to occasionally stop thinking about our work, divert the attention away from our daily tasks (and everything else going on in our life) and with undivided attention, devote some focused time to mental activities that will result in developing better brain power.  Brain Research Experts agree, we must find a way to successfully shift attention away from our constant mental chatter, onto another track.  Take our train of thought in a different direction.  Put repetitive, worrisome thoughts on hold for awhile and simply exercise the mind like we exercise the body.  DAILY!  Call it cranial calisthenics, grey matter gymnastics, a health club for the head.  You've got to workout your "mental muscles" to keep them strong. Being a mental "couch potato" can have dire consequences! When we focus on mental activities that require using the memory in an active, fun and interesting way, we do wonders to avoid the brain drain that leads to forgetfulness and mental fatigue.  It has been proven that memory exercise can actually help to prevent the onset of dementia and/or Alzheimer's,  preserving the power of the mind for many, many more years to come.  It's NEVER too late to begin to do mental workouts.  Remember, "Use it or lose it!'  READ THIS FIRST!
